[...] It's May 28th and Ubisoft is showing off its wares at its own press event. The event is shaping up t...d some new IPs, the event is shaping up to be a highlight of any gamers' calendar. Far Cry 2 leaves me with very mixed impressions. For anyone that doesn't know, originally the Far Cry franchise was handled by Crytek, most recently responsible for Crysis. Now, the game is being handled by one of Ubisoft's studios. Having already played and immensely disliked Far Cry Instincts Predator for the 360 (also handled by Ubisoft) I can't muster up much enthusiasm for what looks like it will be more of the same. Not to mention, Ubisoft hasn't made a single FPS that has won me over this gen. I'd be more excited if Crytek was behind this, but there's always Crysis 2. It only takes one game to make a conference great. Prince of Persia: Prodigy is definitely that game that makes this Ubidays something to remember. As a casual fan the PoP franchise, I like the fact that Ubisoft is taking the latest one in a new and interesting direction. Not only is this one of the most unique and beautifully rendered games I've seen on the current gen platforms, but if the free form nature of Assassin's Creed transfers over, I'll be hoping the sands of time pour a little faster for its release. It's rare for games that fail to sell over a million copies to receive a sequel from their publishers. It's even rarer that pigs talk and wear clothes. I never played the first Beyond Good & Evil, but from the praise it has received from those who have, I clearly missed out on something special. Luckily, it seems my lapse in judgment and that of many others hasn't led to the demise of a noteworthy intellectual property. Ubisoft is bringing out a sequel after all. Although I can't say I understand exactly what's taking place in the debut trailer, I look forward to seeing more of what the game has to offer. [...]

I might have to dig out my old copies of ST Format now... they had a feature on PoP from when it was newly ported to the 68000 machines, and even some on-disc things like a version of the animation editor that had been modified as a general purpose tool for anyone to use. It came with a lot of the game's sprites included as demo material and it was very impressive to see how you managed to make e.g. a realistic looking flame just by randomly choosing between four cleverly-drawn base images :)

Did you ever fancy being an animator "proper"? The skills in choosing the right freeze-frame part of a character's movement to make into one of the very limited number of sprite frames are something common to the great movie animators after all... you are limited in terms of memory and CPU speed, they're limited in terms of production budget (cost of cels, paint, labour) and schedule (each drawing needs time to produce), but both have a similar end result... seemingly fluid and realistic motion that is actually, when you analyse it properly, only running at 8~12 frames/sec.

Writing a game is a long process and you got to keep an eye to details, especially on something like assembler language.

You chose a good/popular platform (Apple II) at the time, and a great topic (POP).

Thanks for writing this as an inspiration for others.

Fantastic game, I as many others enjoyed PoP when younger. It's been real interesting reading articles about how it became to be. Thanks for releasing the source code, brings insight on how programming has changed over the years.

Information about the UNIX version of Prince of Persia published by Broderbund is hard to come by. Actually I'd like to buy a copy but one step at a time. Do you happen to know anything about this port of the original POP?
(Wikipedia had information about it at one time, its archived somewhere I can't locate)
